The Convent High School prides itself in Academic Excellence, but recently it added another milestone to its sporting records. Just a few days before we celebrate the 150th Anniversary, our Jays Limited Under 16 (U-16) netball team copped the title of National Secondary Schools Netball Ball-o-rama championship

This occurred on the same day of the opening ceremony of the National Secondary School Netball Season at the Dominica Grammar School grounds on Wednesday 23rd January 2008.

There were addresses by different officials including Ms. Mavis Williams, President of the National Netball association; a former CHS student, as well as Mr. Oswald Savarin; Sports coordinator.

The students, under the leadership of Omean Charles and Cheznelle Sorhaindo, both third formers, fought hard to assume the title. The students defeated the St. Martin’s Secondary School U-16 team with a score of 4-2. They advanced and went on to win hard fought games against the Goodwill Secondary School U-20, with a score of 4-1 as well as the highlight of the day, the dethroning of last year’s Ball-o-rama champions, the Dominica State College, 2-1.

The Principal, Mrs. Josephine Dublin, expressed her joy and elation at the morning assembly the following day and encouraged the students to keep it up. She also added that the school body should turn out in large numbers to support the teams as they continue to show excellence in their sport.

We are happy to mention that seven students from the U-16 team namely Omean Charles, Cheznelle Sorhaindo, Mershanna Winston, Bernita Gregoire, Asheibba Lloyd, Teri-Ann Nelson and Jewelé Browne are also undertaking training for a space on the National U-16 team to represent Dominica in Antigua soon.

The Convent High School also has an Under 14 team and these both teams will officially begin their quest for the National Titles on February 19 at The CHS court.

Mrs. Julia Douglas-Johnson; the physical education teacher, has been the netball coach of the CHS for the past three years.
