Communications Club President’s Report 2017

by Ishita Dhiman

It is my pleasure to address you all today as the president of the Communications Club. Today’s banquet celebrates all the hard work and effort that the members and teachers of the Communications Club have put in throughout the year.

This past year has been very eventful as our club members have participated in numerous events and competitions. The competition season began with Louise Aarons and Brigitte Joseph placing second in the Rotary Quiz Competition, and ended with Melissa Williams who came first in the Dominica Traveller Magazine Young Journalist Competition and the Discover Dominica Authority Tourism Awareness Month Essay Competition. Additionally, several members have participated in the Florida Cruise Association Essay Competition and the ECCB essay competition for which the results are still pending.

Partnerships have always been important to the Com Club, which is why we thank the Environmental Club for their partnership in the Environmental Impromptu Speech Competition, where we were represented by Amy Augustine. Working with you in the past has always been a pleasure. We forward to working with you again. In addition, we acknowledge the members who wrote the performance poem  “We Have to Build Our Nation” and Allyna Bernard for leading the poem at the Creole Day assembly. The poem was well received and allowed for the more performance oriented side of the club to be seen.

Beyond these events, our club presence in normal school life and events should be acknowledged. We thank the members who participated in Bible readings and Bidding Prayers at the many school masses. We also thank all club members for their help and contributions in carrying out three bake sales throughout the course of the school year - those cupcakes certainly don’t sell themselves!

Breaking from our usual tradition, this year marks the first time the Communications Club held auditions for selecting its new members. The club welcomed a grand total of 10 new Com Club Girls, the highest number in the club’s history. The new members have been very active and were badged at the end of the third term during assembly. We thank them for their service and hope that it continues into the new year.

On a glitzier note, this year was also remarkable because one of our members, Cheyenne Dewhurst, was crowned Miss Teen Dominica 2017. This is the first time a Com Club girl has coped this prestigious title, a fact of which made us happy. We are very proud of Cheyenne, and are honoured that we played a part in her journey - fittingly, she won the category of ‘Best Speech’.

Lastly, we extend an extra word to thanks to the outstanding teachers who made it possible for the club to achieve these accomplishments. We would like specially to acknowledge our principal, Mrs. Josephine Dublin, for her support in the Communications Club, all Communication Club teachers for their never ending dedication, Environmental Club teachers for their partnership, and numerous other teachers who gave us a helping hand this year.

As Ann Landers once said, “Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work”. Just as this year our club members took advantage of the opportunities, I'm sure that next year our members will continue to do the same with renewed and more fervent vigour.
