The English Language Department led the school in recognising Literacy Week 2014. Celebrations commenced with a special assembly led by Mrs. Daria Sorhaindo, Head of the English Language Department. Special guests to the Monday morning's assembly were Dr Shuyler Esprit, the featured speaker and Ms Ferdina Frampton, the representative of LIME, who this year agreed to be the headline sponsor of this year's Literacy Week celebrations.

Dr Esprit in her address to the students encouraged them to develop a love for reading. She informed them that through books they could travel, learn of other cultures and experience other worlds. Certificates were awarded to the student with the highest average in English from each class. These were distributed by Dr Esprit and Ms Frampton. Each of these awardees also received a $10.00 top up from LIME.

Activities for the remainder of the week included the reading of surprise stories by selected teachers during break. On Wednesday 14th, students of the fourth form were invited to the UWI Open Campus Site where they viewed a documentary film Voices of Abuse on child abuse in the Caribbean. Mr Francis Joseph, creator of the film, was present and presented even more information on the issue here in Dominica. There was a question and answer session during which many of the students expressed their views on the issue and even gave some valuable suggestions as to how more information on the matter could be solicited. The planned DEF poetry, spoken word and short story, unfortunately was cancelled as the Department during that week was short-staffed. Celebrations ended on Friday with the assembly led by Miss Odessa Elie and the Communications Club.
