History week was celebrated last week under the theme Dominica's Heritage Sites.

The History Department headed by Mrs Deborah Harris, celebrated History week from Monday October 8 through to Friday October 12.  Convent High School became a treasure chest of history. Each day began with a special assembly and sparkled with a different gem.

The week began with the Fifth Formers exhibition on  churches and religious sites that have been declared Cultural sites by UNESCO; this display of posters, photographs, and models of churches and landscaping, took place throughout the week in the school’s auditorium. The following days radiated with skits, and musical performances. On Wednesday the Form one’s and two’s, highlighted the watermills and plantation works, and Dominica’s mythic geography; on Thursday, the Third Formers focused on Plantation houses, and Mrs Ophelia Olivache Marie, former student, St Caeclian, and teacher performed in Creole to the enjoyment of all. She was presented with a plaque and CHS memorabilia.

To end this eventful week, the Fourth Formers highlighted the Botanic gardens  and landscaping sites. The music and drama students, directed by Mrs. Hugette St, Hilaire,. staged an entertaining skit depicting the changes in Dominican history from the Kalinago people through to the arrival of the Africans and the Emancipation proclamation. That day the students through their principal, Mrs. Josephine Dublin, learnt that the Convent High School was built on part of the Botanic gardens grounds The original area was given to the school, is the area to the front of the school which still has the original gardens wall now boasting the beautiful mural of CHS’s history. In 1956, yet another portion was given on a 99-year lease to the school to expand; this area now houses the netball court.

The History Department indeed made History alive last week. The Department comprises – Sr  Alces, Ms. A. Jno Baptiste, Ms. S. Alexander, Ms S. Blanc and Mrs. D. Harris, the Head of Department.
