Leandra Lander Geography teacher of the Convent High School was named Phenomenal Teacher (Female) by the Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT) at a special Awards Dinner at the Great House, Old Stone Restaurant, on Thursday, October 6 2016, which was also celebrated as Teacher’s Appreciation Day in Dominica.

Members of the Executive of the DAT, fellow teachers , family, friends and  members of the media were present to witness Miss Lander emerge the winner out of a field of fourteen other female teachers from across Dominica of both primary and secondary schools. Mr. Saline Arl Anselm, a French Teacher and Vice Principal of the St. John’s Academy in Portsmouth, emerged as the Phenomenal Teacher (Male) from a field of three.

Each nominee had to fill a form which requested information on their school and community involvement as well as impact on colleagues and students. The principal of the respective schools also were required to submit their references about the nominated teacher.

Adjudicator Dr. Valda Henry noted that she was impressed with the applications which came from teachers of varying teaching experience; some teaching for one year to as many as twenty years . The nominated teachers she mentioned assist and spearhead various projects such as School Feeding Programmes and Artistic Clubs which impact the lives of their students positively.

Miss Lander manages the CHS’ Sign Language Club, Speech Chorale and Choir as some of her many involvements in and out of the Convent High School.
