Retirees Honoured at the Feast of St. Jean Baptiste de la Salle

The Catholic Schools Board honoured retirees- Carmel Agar, Lucille Blackman, Dorothy Leevy, Marcella Severin and Bertha Toulon at a special mass on the Feast of St. Jean Baptiste de la Salle.

The Catholic Schools Board and the Dominica Association of Catholic Teachers (DACT) celebrated the feast of St. Jean Baptiste de la Salle (Patron saint of teachers) on Wednesday 30 April at the Roseau Cathedral Chapel. His Lordship Bishop Gabriel Malzaire was the chief celebrant, Monsignors William John-Lewis, Eustace Thomas and Dr. Reginald La Fleur con celebrated this Eucharistic celebration.

His Lordship vivified St. Jean Baptiste de la Salle by highlighting the saint’s genius, humble life and the industry with which he carried out his mission as priest and teacher. St. Jean Baptiste de la Salle was also the founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the first to set up training colleges for teachers.  His Lordship urged all teachers present to emulate this dedicated saint; he also encouraged the Catholic schools to continue the celebration of the feast of St. Jean Baptiste annually on the 30 April. Also he sang the hymn to this saint and  instructed that it be learnt and sung on the saint’s feast day.

During this celebration, teachers of 10 years service and more who are retired or have retired from a Catholic Institution were honoured with a plaque of recognition. In addition, the ICM sisters and the Christian Brothers who were instrumental in initiating Catholic education in Dominica were also honoured.
