Document Freedom Day

Today, March 31, 2010 is Document Freedom Day.  (From the DFD official website) "Document Freedom Day (DFD) is a global day for document liberation. It will be a day of grassroots effort to educate the public about the importance of Free Document Formats and Open Standards in general."

CHS is playing its part.  Over the past three years the office application suite installed in the CHS computer facilities is OpenOffice.org(OOo). OpenOffice.org uses the OpenDocument Format (ODF), and that can be used by any application, free or not.  As an office application suite used at home or school, OOo does the job well and in some cases better than the other popular proprietary software.  Let's not forget the savings. At a cost of $0.00, approximately US$400 less than other popular proprietary software, at CHS, we save hundreds of thousands of dollars on licenses.
